Zhao Kuangyin is the historical first Song emperor — the man who seized power at Chenqiao in 960 CE when his soldiers draped the yellow imperial robe over him during a fabricated Khitan invasion alert. He demanded three rules during the march back: no hurting civilians, no looting, no touching the previous emperor's family. For a Five Dynasties coup the body count was remarkably low. In Throne and Tempest he is two years into his reign and already carrying the Yanyun problem: the Sealed Treasury exists to buy back the Sixteen Prefectures from the Khitans, with war funding as fallback.
He reduced military generals' independent power to prevent another warlord cycle — a policy Han Wei reads as tyranny until the protagonist proves the treasury's purpose. At the Confinement Tower climax he tells Han Wei he refused to execute General Wang not from weakness but because endless revenge perpetuates the system that creates General Wangs. The Lone Tyrant boss is not Zhao Kuangyin himself but Han Wei's mental image of young emperor-as-monster — staff and fists at the height of Chenqiao-era physique.
Story Appearances jianghu-legacy Throne and Tempest Kaifeng Lost Chapter unlocking the Imperial Palace — infiltrate a sealed treasury, unravel Han Wei's revenge plot, and face the Lone Tyrant in the Confinement Tower.
