Aunt Han is one of the most beloved figures in Where Winds Meet, a woman whose fierce independence and kindness shape much of the Qinghe experience. But the Kaifeng finale reveals that her warmth was born from something deeply painful.
When the Shimmer of South draws us into an illusory realm inside the Revery Hall, we witness Aunt Han's past unfold through a series of chess-like acts. She had a twin brother. Their father, a Jianghu wanderer, died under mysterious circumstances involving a bet. Their mother took her own life shortly after, leaving two orphaned children with no protector.
A wealthy family named Liang adopted the twins, but the adoption was anything but charitable. The family's young heir suffered from a strange illness, and the twins were taken in as "medical catalysts." The original Chinese text heavily implies this was not metaphorical. When Miss Liang calls the twins her "heart and liver," the language points toward literal organ harvesting. The twins were also forced to restore an ancient Tang Dynasty music score, with promised payment stolen by servants.
When the twins attempted to escape, Aunt Han's brother pushed her free and stayed behind. The screen goes dark at that moment, and we never learn his fate directly. But after the twins completed the score, the entire Liang household was massacred overnight. Money and silver were left untouched. Only the music score vanished.
This opens the game's most debated puzzles. The leading theory identifies Miss Liang as Qianye (Chenya). The evidence is compelling: Qianye's reaction upon first meeting Aunt Han carries an unusual intimacy, as if reuniting with someone from a shared past. During Qianye's boss fight, a bandaged figure emerges from her shadow, wrapping around the heart and liver area, possibly representing the brother whose organs were taken. Early testers even saw placeholder text describing this figure as "another person, like a twin."
As for who destroyed the Liang family, two theories dominate. The first points to Li Zuo, the last legitimate Tang successor, who would have motivation to reclaim the ceremonial Tang score at any cost. The second theory argues that Aunt Han herself returned for vengeance, possibly joining the Aureate Pavilion to master the skills needed to carry it out. If Qianye is indeed Miss Liang, then one theory has Li Zuo saving Qianye from Aunt Han's wrath, while the other has Aunt Han fleeing from Li Zuo after the massacre.
Either way, Aunt Han's story reveals how cycles of cruelty breed cycles of revenge. She eventually found refuge at Heaven's Pier, but that sanctuary was destroyed by Qianye in the Qinghe main story, perpetuating the cycle. Two people shaped by the same household's cruelty, locked in a tragic orbit they may never escape.
