You carved your name on something at the very start of the game. You carried it for sixteen years without knowing it may be the most powerful treasure in the world. For over two centuries, that jade passed through generals, heroes, traitors, ghosts, and a crumbling empire before it reached you. This is the story of the Golden Peach.
The Golden Peach is based on a real Tang Dynasty artifact. In the game, it was first gifted to the founder of the Masked Troupe, then entrusted to General Guo Xin after a massive rebellion shattered the empire. Guo Xin carried it to the Jade Gate Pass and spent forty years guarding it. He never left. He held the line until he died, not because he understood the treasure's power, but because someone asked him to.
A decade after Guo Xin's death, a Masked Troupe disciple named Lan He heard about the Golden Peach. To carry it without dragging his sect into politics, he faked his own death in a street fight. The disgrace erased his identity, but only a ghost with no name could carry the treasure safely. Lan He was also a Harmonizer, gifted with the ability to hear the true voice in every person. But nomadic raiders caught him, broke his leg, and destroyed his voice. His Harmonizer abilities vanished. The Golden Peach fell into Uyghur hands.
This is where Zhang Yichao entered the story. He fought the Uyghur nobles, recovered the Golden Peach, and befriended Lan He. The two climbed the Dasan Pass together. At the top, Zhang Yichao planted his blades in the ground and declared that passing through alone was meaningless. In his lifetime, he would bring everyone through and give them the life they deserved. Moved by these words, the weakened Lan He entrusted the Golden Peach to him.
Zhang Yichao united people across ethnicities, religions, and clans. He reclaimed Hexi. But at nearly seventy years old, he made one final sacrifice: he went to live in Chang'an as a political hostage, surrendering his ambition so his people could have lasting peace. Before leaving, he entrusted everything to his nephew Zhang Huaishen: his army, his people, and the Golden Peach. He never told his nephew how to open it.
For twenty-three years Zhang Huaishen protected Hexi without the treasure's help. Each year after a good harvest, he sent animal sculptures to his uncle as messages. In the game's Lion Tomb, when you move those sculptures between two divided rooms, you are carrying messages between an uncle and nephew who would never meet again. Zhang Yichao's final wish, discovered only after his death, was simply that his nephew would live a long and happy life.
The relay continued through betrayal and collapse, through Palm Strike Sage and the painter who waited outside a death trap for his friend. Every story in Lion Tomb is a chapter in this grand relay. Every hero commemorated there was once a link in a chain of sacrifice, carrying the Golden Peach one step closer to you.
