Synopsis

The Young Wanderer reconstructs the life of a man who is already dead. *Burlap Sack* is the second quest series of Chapter 3 - set in Hexi and Jade Gate Pass, centered on the memory of an unknown hero named for the cloth pouch he carried everywhere. The pouch is his name because the pouch is the only thing the surviving fragments of his life agree on.The structure is memory-based. The protagonist visits the same places Burlap Sack visited and recovers his recollections piece by piece. The series moves through five quests in roughly chronological story-order: *A Brief Respite* (the caravan rest); *Campfire under Stars* (Burlap Sack receives shocking news at the fire); *Vultures and Vipers* (caravan ambushed by bandits; Burlap Sack's true identity is forcibly revealed to his fellow travelers); *Clawing to Light* (the siblings Bao and Han save Burlap Sack; he recovers the Cloth Pouch he had been searching for); *Roots Run Deep* (Burlap Sack greets the entry courier - and is stabbed to death seconds later).The hero's name is never given. The pouch was a stand-in for an identity he was trying to either reclaim or escape. The series ends with the Young Wanderer carrying both the memory and the failure forward.
