Hub / Deep Dives / Death of the Governor: Suo Jing's Betrayal and the Five Banes region MAJOR SPOILERS Death of the Governor: Suo Jing's Betrayal and the Five Banes The 'boring' Liangzhou campaign quest is a courtroom tragedy about poisoned trust, imperial timing, and a boss named for heaven's malefic star. Article body MAJOR SPOILERS - Late game content ahead. Reveal Article *Death of the Governor* reads like a dry palace investigation — eavesdrop on guests, briefly play as Eunuch Zhong, then fight something called the Five Remnants. The quest's real subject is the Zhang household's collapse and the Guiyi army fracture that Hexi's Golden Peach relay has been building toward for two centuries.
Zhang Huaishen (historically Zhang Huishan) has held Hexi for twenty-three years without the Jiedushi title the court repeatedly denied. While he recovers from an assassination attempt, authority passes to Suo Jing — his sworn brother and childhood friend, modeled on the historical traitor Suo Shun. Suo Jing discovers Zhang has been fed a slow poison no physician can cure. He also notices Zhang's wife Zhang Huaiyue meeting suspiciously with Zhang Huaiying, son of the hostage-general Zhang Yichao, returned from Chang'an at the worst possible moment. Imperial envoys arrive to finally confer Jiedushi — not on the nephew who held the frontier, but timed to test whether command should pass to Yichao's bloodline. Suo Jing watches the alliance form and does not intervene, hoping catastrophe might still be averted without his hand showing. The banquet night fractures when coarse guest Li Huishang disrupts the hall and the household massacre begins. Historical funerary inscriptions and Zuo Zhuan allusions point inward: "Base men wrought calamity. The lord was beguiled." The killers were not foreign raiders but the right-hand man inside the residence. The boss fight encodes the tragedy symbolically. The Five Banes (Five Remnants) draw on Wu San, a malefic star associated in later tradition with Xi Wang Mu and — through the golden peach myth — with Hexi's jade relay. Eunuch Zhong's green robes and crimson fly whisk mirror the star's red-at-a-distance, blue-green-up-close duality. Defeating the three aspects — earthly misfortune, heaven's hearing, human delusion — closes on Jiang Weichen's unfinished death poem and flips Liangzhou to its Fallen world state until *A Bitter Draught of Home* restores it.
*Based on analysis by [fwalicia](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYiieNxEKskaAzhrmA0p7iQ).*
